WFP - United Nations World Food Programme
Every year, the United Nations World Food Programme helps up to 90 million people in about 80 of the poorest countries of the world. In 2007, the WFP supported 78 million people with its food programme. The teams are active from the southern Sahara via the Middle East to Asia and Latin America.
In 2007, the WFP brought 3.3 million tons of food to hungry people all over the world: every day, 30 ships, 70 planes, 5000 trucks and, if necessary, camels, donkeys or elephants are employed to provide prompt and elementary survival aid to hungry people worldwide.
At the Entertainment Convention, WFP Germany will present its Internet games "Food Force" and "FreeRice", which are aimed specifically at students and adolescents.
Under the motto "Helping instead of Shooting", the WFP is now offering the game "Food Force" in German. Member of the national football team Jan Schlaudraff is ambassador of the game, pop star DJ BoBo has lent his voice to its main character. The German “Food Force" can be downloaded from the web free-of-charge and is a real PC game in which players as characters must complete a 12-level mission consisting of executing a WFP emergency aid operation in a famine-hit region. The game was specifically designed for children and teenagers between the ages of eight and thirteen. Internationally it is already a success: in action-packed “Food Force” missions, more than five million players worldwide are now busy helping those in need.
"FreeRice", on the other hand, is a free internet quiz. The questions are sorted by school subjects (learning quiz!) while the level of difficulty is adjustable. For each correct answer provided by users the partner companies of the WFP donate 20 rice grains. So far, enough rice could be generated by “FreeRice” to feed 2.6 million people for a day!
